By: Patricia Cornwell
Synopsis
With this novel, bestselling author Patricia Cornwell created one of crime fiction’s most compelling heroines: gusty medical examiner Kay Scarpetta. Cornwell’s gift for combining cutting edge criminology with nerve-shattering suspense makes this book a true modern classic.
Under cover of night in Richmond, Virginia, a human monster strikes, leaving a gruesome trail of stranglings that has paralyzed the city. Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta suspects the worst: a deliberate campaign by a brilliant serial killer whose signature offers precious few clues. With an unerring eye, she calls on the latest advances in forensic research to unmask the madman. But this investigation will test Kay like no other, because it’s being sabotaged from within – and someone wants her dead.
My Thoughts
I love this genre and have no idea why I haven’t found Patricia Cornwell before now. I am now definitely a fan. I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was better than the more current (non Kay Scarpetta) books I have read. It grabs your attention quickly and holds it throughout the entirety of the novel.
The plot moved along at a good pace and the characters were likable. I even liked Pete Marino, though I hope he has some significant character growth, especially regarding his homophobia. I also hope to see more of Scarpetta’s niece.
I knew going in that the book is 30 years old, so the dated technology descriptions didn’t bother me. It actually helps one to realize just how far we’ve come technology wise in thirty years. I fully intend on continuing with this series and will be getting the second book as soon as I get to work tomorrow (I work at a library). If you like crime dramas, you have to give this one a read.
These are just my thoughts. What are yours?
